The Slice: Cat’s protective headgear blocks owner’s comfort zone

Here’s why Patti Baird is not getting enough sleep.

A stray cat came in through the pet door and got into a fight with Baird’s pet feline, Rudy.

Rudy suffered head wounds and is now wearing one of those megaphone collars. Baird has to check multiple times a night to make sure the protective device is still in place. “A nightmare,” she said.

Answering last Friday’s Slice question: Kenyon Fields remembers a scene in a submarine movie where a Russian crew is singing the national anthem and that sound transitions into that of a big, full-throated chorus. No, he’s not thinking of the “It’s a Long Way to Tipperary” scene in “Das Boot,” though something similar happens in that submarine movie.

Among my own favorites is the ending of an episode of “Mad Men” where Father Gill’s alone-in-his-room singing of “Early in the Morning” eases into the unmistakable voices of Peter, Paul and Mary.

Then there’s Will Ferrell singing “Whole Wide World” in “Stranger Than Fiction” and having that morph into the high-energy version by Wreckless Eric.

And going back a ways, there’s the scene in the John Sayles movie “Baby It’s You” where the rock band at a college dance performs (by special request) “Strangers in the Night.” Midway through the band’s shaky rendition we in the audience hear the recorded voice of Frank Sinatra take over.

Slice answers: Several men with color vision deficiency said there’s no big mystery about where they turn for help choosing clothes when getting dressed. “Two words,” wrote Joel Novin. “My wife.”

“Once apparel is chosen, you memorize what goes with what,” said a friend.

Then there was this from George Weisbarth up in Newport. “When it comes to day-to-day color choices, I find that any tee shirt or sweatshirt goes well with blue denim.”

And this from North Idaho’s Forrest Schuck. “Judging from what I see around our little town, color-blind and not color-blind select their attire exactly the same way.”
