Lyon guides Grizzlies to upset of Rams

John Lyon led a balanced offensive attack with 13 points and Newport used a late rally to upset Riverside 49-45 in a Northeast A League game Friday in Newport.

Lyon hit a go-ahead 3-pointer with 3 minutes left and the Grizzlies (9-6, 4-5) never looked back. Newport outscored Riverside 19-12 in the final quarter.

Cole Pancho added 11 points and Ty McDaniels and Kyler Zorica chipped in nine apiece for Newport. Josh Smith pulled down 14 of the Grizzlies’ 34 rebounds.

Andrew Kramer and Tyler Axtell scored 17 and 14, respectively, for the Rams (13-2, 8-1), who lost for the first time in their past seven games.

Riverside beat Newport 65-49 in the teams’ first meeting on Dec. 16.

Deer Park 58, Colville 55: Nate Guske scored 28 points, including the go-ahead 3-pointer with 8 seconds left, and the Stags (6-9, 4-5) edged the host Indians (1-13, 1-8). Guske hit four 3s in the second half. Colville’s Dallis Martin scored 13 points, but his heave at the buzzer rattled off the rim. Colville’s Sam Artzis tallied a team-high 17 points.

Freeman 52, Lakeside 47: Jake Phipps made 12 of 15 free throws, including 10 of 13 in the fourth quarter, and scored 26 points as the Scotties (7-7, 5-4) erased a 13-point first-quarter deficit and upset the visiting Eagles (12-3, 7-2). Phipps also had seven rebounds and two steals. Lakeside’s Ryan Quigley had 20 points, seven rebounds, three blocks and two steals.

Medical Lake 71, Chewelah 34: Jaelon Stith had 17 points and nine rebounds and Tellas Johnson added 15 points, 11 rebounds and five assists as the Cardinals (10-4, 7-2) dominated throughout in a win over the visiting Cougars (1-14, 0-9). Chewelah’s Zach McMillin tallied a team-high 13 points.

Inland Empire 5A

Coeur d’Alene 49, Lewiston 34: Elliot Sparks had 12 points and five assists and Tony Naccarato added 12 points and eight rebounds as the Vikings (9-5, 2-2) topped the visiting Bengals (3-8, 0-2). Lewiston’s Michael Murphy and Trystan Bradley scored a combined 23 points.

Great Northern

West Valley 54, East Valley 41: The Eagles (11-4, 5-2) used stifling defense to build a commanding first-half lead and held on late to beat the visiting Knights (5-10, 2-5). Austin Yoakum, Dylan Steen and Martin Herford scored 12 points apiece for WV, which limited East Valley to just eight first-half points. The Knights cut the 15-point deficit to seven in the fourth quarter, but couldn’t come all the way back. Jeremiah Hillard scored 12 points for East Valley.

Pullman 50, Cheney 29: Micah Lagerquist scored a game-high 17 points and the Greyhounds (12-3, 5-2) pulled away in the third quarter and beat the host Blackhawks (4-12, 0-8). Pullman’s 20-8 third-quarter run was sparked by four early turnovers. Cheney’s Riley Jones and Brett Wyborney scored six points apiece.

Northeast 2B

Northwest Christian 75, Reardan 73: Ryan Ricks scored 21 points, David Olds added 19, including 13 in the second quarter, and the Crusaders (11-5, 8-3) fended off the Indians’ (8-8, 5-6) second-half rally and won in Reardan. The Indians’ Brandon Reuben scored a game-high 30 points, including 16 of Reardan’s 18 points in the fourth.

Davenport 58, Wilbur-Creston 54: Nathan Hopkins scored seven points in the fourth quarter and the Gorillas (6-10, 3-8) rallied late to upset the Wildcats (12-4, 7-4) in Creston. Davenport’s Austin Zeller tossed in a game-high 18 points, including six in the final quarter. Wilbur-Creston’s Trystan Rosman tallied a team-high 15 points.

Liberty 65, Lind-Ritzville/Sprague 42: Keith Dumaw led a trio of scorers in double figures with 19 points and the Lancers (16-1, 11-0) forced 15 turnovers in a win over the visiting Broncos (10-6, 6-5). Match Burnham and Chase Burnham added 16 and 10 points, respectively, for Liberty. LRS’s Cort Ruzicka scored a team-high 14 points.

St. George’s 52, Tekoa-Rosalia 28: Felix Tsai scored 16 points and Cade Peplinski and Issac Werkman added 12 apiece as the Dragons (10-7, 6-5) blew the game open with a 20-5 third-quarter run and dumped the Timberwolves (1-15, 1-10) in Rosalia. Cooper Angelo and Dillon Jacobs scored nine points apiece for Tekoa-Rosalia.

Springdale 69, Kettle Falls 53: Chandler Carr poured in 29 points, including 11 in the third quarter, and pulled down 21 rebounds to guide the Chargers (7-9, 4-7) past the host Bulldogs (1-15, 0-11). Kettle Falls’ Brandon Hansen tallied a team-high 11 points.

Southeast 1B

Pomeroy 48, Garfield-Palouse 42: Cole Mayfield hit a key 3-pointer with less than a minute to play and Cade Gingrich made two free throws in the closing seconds to help the Pirates (13-2, 8-1) get past the visiting Vikings (13-1, 8-1). Tyson Feider led Pomeroy with 21 points. Garfield-Palouse’s Tyler Thurman tallied a team-high 13 points.

Colton 76, St. John-Endicott 58: Austin Meyer led four players in double figures with 26 points and the Wildcats (7-3, 6-2) routed the Eagles (6-9, 3-6) in St. John. Colton’s Grant Kinzer scored 20, Carter Dahmen had 16 and Brady Chadwick chipped in 10. SJE’s Adam Blakeley tallied a team-high 17 points.

Liberty Christian 79, Oakesdale 33: Chris Kelly made 4 of 6 3-pointers and scored 20 points to guide the Patriots past the Nighthawks (3-10, 1-6) in Richland. Tanner Dingman tallied a team-high 14 points for Oakesdale.

Nonleague

Wellpinit 41, Republic 40: Cedric Bowen had 14 points and six steals and the Redskins (11-4) survived the Tigers’ (7-7) spirited second-half rally and won in Wellpinit. The Redskins came away with 26 steals. Republic’s Aaron Fritts led all scorers with 19 points but his 3-pointer at the final buzzer was off the mark.

Odessa-Harrington 56, Inchelium 44: The Titans (8-7) forced 15 second-half turnovers and rallied to beat the host Hornets (2-10). Sam Schafer scored 18 points and Carsen Weber added 16 for Odessa-Harrington, which outscored Inchelium 34-21 after halftime. The Hornets’ Quentin Holford and Kenny Lelone scored 12 points apiece and Roger Finley added 10.

Curlew 77, Columbia 38: Aaron McCullough scored 25 points on 12 of 17 shooting and grabbed eight rebounds to guide the Cougars (11-4) to an easy win over the visiting Lions (0-14). Gunnar Brown added 14 points, eight steals and five assists for Curlew.

Selkirk 60, Valley Christian 41: Jacob Couch and Cole Dawson scored 14 points apiece and the Rangers (8-5) routed the Panthers (2-11) in Ione. James Segalla led Valley Christian with 15 points.
