Presley leads late run as Cougs top Utes

Tia Presley scored 17 points, including five in a late 9-0 run, and the Washington State women’s basketball team pulled away for a 63-54 Pac-12 Conference win over Utah on Friday in Pullman.

The Cougars (12-7, 3-4) took the lead for good at 48-46 on a Dawnyelle Awa 3-pointer with 5:38 to play. Taryn Wicijowski had a chance to tie it 30 seconds later but missed a free throw and her three-point play at 4:07 pulled the Utes (6-12, 0-7) within 52-50. Pressley turned a steal into a three-point play and then made two free throws after another steal to make it 57-50 at 3:08.

Lia Galdeira, who had 14 points, followed with a steal and a layup and Mariah Cooks had two free throws at 1:50 to make it 61-50.

Washington State finished 15 of 16 from the foul line, making all 14 in the second half.

Wicijowski led Utah, which had 19 turnovers, with 23 points.

Washington 85, Colorado 82: Jazmine Davis became the Huskies’ career scoring leader and made a clutch 3-pointer in the final minute to help Washington beat the Buffaloes in a Pac-12 Conference game in Seattle.

Davis gave the Huskies (15-4, 4-3) an 81-77 lead with 49 seconds left on a 3 from the corner. She finished with 25 points, surpassing Jamie Redd (1995-99, 2,027 points) on a free throw with 13:32 left in the first half. Kelsey Plum added 23 points and Talia Walton scored 18.

Jen Reese made two free throws to pull Colorado (9-9, 2-5) within two with 27 seconds left. Plum answered with a pair of free throws, but Jamee Swan’s 3-pointer cut the deficit to 83-82 with 13 seconds left.

Davis and Kelli Kingma each made 1 of 2 free throws and Colorado’s Jasmine Sborov missed a 3 in the final seconds. Lexy Kresl scored 23 and Swan finished with 22 points, 11 rebounds and six assists.

(18) Whitworth 83, (21) Puget Sound 77: K.C. McConnell scored 28 points and Jessica Kramer battled taller players for 20 points and eight rebounds to lift the Pirates to a Northwest Conference win over the visiting Loggers. After the Loggers took a 77-76 lead with just seconds remaining, Lexie Zappone hit a 3 to give the Pirates a lead they would not surrender.

“That was huge,” Whitworth coach Helen Higgs said. “But (Lexie is) a gamer. She’s not afraid to take the big shot.”

Both teams came into the contest with only one loss. With the win, Whitworth (15-1, 6-1) moves to second place in the league behind No. 6 George Fox, which remains undefeated.

“K.C. is a competitor,” Higgs said of McConnell. “She’s banged up, but she got us going early.”

McConnell had 16 first-half points to fuel a 47-39 Whitworth lead at halftime.

Amanda Forshay had 23 points and eight rebounds for the Loggers (13-2, 4-2). The Pirates play at 4 p.m. today against Pacific Lutheran at Whitworth Fieldhouse.
