Obituary: Hughes, Vincent Patrick

Age 87

HUGHES, Vincent Patrick March 14, 1927 - January 25, 2015 Vincent Patrick (Pat) Hughes, M.D., FACR, age 87, passed peacefully into Eternity on Sunday at Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center in Spokane, Washington.

He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Joan Catherine (Fitz) Hughes; by his 10 children: Mark (Averi), Fr.

Benedict (Kevin), Fran, Marie, Fr.

Brendan (Barry), Sheila (Mark) Strain, Theresa (Tim) Drahman, Sr. Marie Emmanuel (Margaret), Marty (Evan), and Monica; 15 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, sisters-in-law Anna Mae Fitz, Jean Thompson, Frances Hipp, brother-in-law and sister-in-law Robert and Mary Ann Fitz, along with many nieces and nephews.

He was born March 14, 1927, in Fremont, Ohio, the youngest of eight children, to George F. and Margaret J.

(O’Connor) Hughes.

Dr. Hughes graduated from Aquinas High School in Columbus, Ohio, in 1945.

He received his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Notre Dame in 1948 and his doctorate in medicine from The Ohio State University College of Medicine in 1952.

He interned at Mercy Hospital in Toledo, Ohio, before moving to Port Clinton, Ohio, where he joined the staff at Magruder Hospital and started in private General Practice.

In 1962 he returned to The Ohio State University for a three year residency in Radiology.

Upon completion he joined Hoffman, Birmingham and Associates and practiced as a radiologist at various hospitals and clinics in northern Ohio.

In 1976 Dr. Hughes moved to the Inland Northwest, purchasing a farm in Post Falls, Idaho.

He joined Dr. Robert Sagerson in forming the partnership of Sagerson and Hughes in Spokane, WA.

He also provided consulting services for the Deer Park Hospital, the VA, and various minor emergency centers.

Dr. Hughes was inducted as a Fellow of the American College of Radiology in 1993.

He continued to practice radiology until he retired in February 2013 at the age of 85.

Dr. Hughes was a member of St. Michael parish and enjoyed singing in the parish choir, ushering and serving at the altar.

He will be remembered by all who knew him for his deep Catholic Faith and for his enduring Irish wit.

He had a love of learning and was liberal in sharing his knowledge and wisdom with others.

He was a dedicated husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle, brother-in-law, father-in-law and friend, and will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

His family would like to thank the doctors and staff at Sacred Heart for their compassionate care for Patrick during his final illness.

The continuous thoughts and prayers from family and friends have been truly appreciated.

The kind expressions from so many whose lives he touched have been, and continue to be, a great source of solace and comfort to his family in their time of loss.

Visitation at Mt.

St. Michael will be Thursday, January 29, from 4 - 6:30 p.m. and the Rosary will start at 7 p.m. A Solemn High Requiem Mass will be offered on Friday, January 30, at 10 a.m. at Mt.

St. Michael with interment following at Holy Rosary Cemetery.

Lunch will be provided after the services.
