 (Associated Press)

Bill Elliott headlined the sixth class of inductees into NASCAR’s Hall of Fame in Charlotte, North Carolina, a group that included three champions (Elliot, Joe Weatherly, Rex White), the first – and only – African-American winner (Wendell Scott) and a driver with movie-star looks (Fred Lorenzen). “Awesome Bill From Dawsonville” was NASCAR’s 1988 champion and a 44-race winner. A 16-time winner of NASCAR’s most popular driver award, Elliott won two Daytona 500s. Weatherly won back-to-back titles in 1962-63 and White was the 1960 champion. Scott took the checkered flag on Dec. 1, 1963 in Jacksonville, Florida. Also in 1963, Lorenzen became the first driver to post winnings of more than $100,000. – Associated Press
