Church kicks off summer concerts

An Elvis tribute artist, a 1970s rocker, some burning musicians and a Christian pop artist will fill the bill this month in a series of four summer concerts at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, 8441 N. Indian Trail Road.

This year’s July concerts mark the 10th year the series has been hosted by church members.

Neighbors gather on a sloping lawn on the north side of the church to enjoy the music set up at the base of a hill. Some people bring picnic food while others take advantage of the food available during the concerts.

“It’s a fun group of events,” said Janet Robel, of the church.

The free, family-friendly concerts can draw several hundred people.

On Wednesday, the first concert will feature Ben Klein as Elvis, along with a “Show and Shine” car show. Klein performs internationally.

“I expect a good turnout for him,” Robel said.

The car show has a $10 entry fee per vehicle. The top vehicles will be awarded trophies.

Burgers will be available from JJ’s Grill & Brewhouse for $6 a plate, including chips and a drink. Mickeldean’s Ice Cream will also have items for sale.

The concert on July 15 will feature pop, country and soul duo Donnie Emerson and Nancy Sophia. They will perform original songs and cover popular tracks.

Emerson has gained international recognition for his 1979 album, “Dreamin’ Wild,” which he recorded with his brother, Joe, in their Fruitland, Washington, home studio, Robel said. The album was released in 2012 by Light in the Attic Records, of Seattle.

On July 22, the 1980s pop and rock band Brown Sugar & Cream will perform with musicians from the Learn to Burn School of Music, of Spokane.

The last concert on July 29 features Darin Hilderbrand, a local Christian pop artist who performs his original songs along with cover songs.
