One dead in East Central shooting

Staff reports
One man is dead and two people are being questioned following an argument in East Central Spokane this morning. The shooting followed an apparent domestic dispute inside a home along Altamont Street, police and neighbors said. The couple was asked by the homeowner to leave and apparently continued to argue while outside. According to witnesses the man then began to hit the woman. That’s when a second man showed up, police said, and began arguing with the first man. That disagreement escalated to an altercation about 10 a.m. and the second man pulled a gun and opened fire. Witnesses reported hearing three to four shots. “Neighbors were running from all directions,” said Will Walker, who lives nearby and was about a block away when the gunfire broke out. Police Lt. Steve Wohl confirmed that the man who fired the gun was attempting to help the woman being assaulted. Police have not released the name of either man. “We’re still interviewing people,” Wohl said. Altamont was closed to traffic between Fourth and Fifth avenues as part of the investigation.
