Don’t take dogs shopping
I thought I was the only one on the planet who objected (Annie Pierce’s July 18 letter) to the poorly written service animal law. I have encountered innumerable dogs in grocery stores whose owners are violating the service animal law. I have spoken to the store managers, and they tell me that they aren’t allowed to ask a person if their dog is a service animal even if the dog is not wearing a service animal vest.
Whoever wrote the law did a poor job of protecting the public. The law does say a service animal in a business must have all four feet on the floor. A dog in the basket is the worst. Would you like to have your purse or food in the seat where a dog has rubbed his butt?
You can also tell a service dog by his behavior. Their demeanor is quiet, calm and focused on their owner. I have seen owners carrying little dogs wrapped up in a blanket like a baby. That is no service dog. Why, oh why, would you need to take your dog to the grocery store? It’s happening more and more often.
