Public invited to rally for skate event

From Staff Reports

The promoters who brought the U.S. Figure Skating Championships to Spokane in 2007 and 2010 are asking for help in landing another skating event.

Site inspectors from U.S. Figure Skating will be in town Aug. 6-7 to evaluate Spokane as a possible host of the first Team Challenge Cup. The event, to be held April 22-24, 2016, will feature some of the world’s best skaters representing geographical regions: Team North America, Team Europe and Team Asia.

Barb Beddor and Toby Steward, of Star USA Inc., are asking for volunteers to greet the site selection team as they leave a meeting Aug. 6 at the Davenport Grand Hotel. Volunteers should assemble by 5:30 p.m. in the lobby; signs urging the officials to “Select Spokane!” will be distributed, Beddor said. The aim is to hold a rally for the site selectors as they leave the meeting, she said.

The Team Challenge Cup is hosted by U.S. Figure Skating. Each team will include three women, three men, two pair teams and two ice dance teams.

The 2010 U.S. Figure Skating Championships in Spokane still holds the attendance record for that event, at 158,170.
