Area roundup: Gonzaga women’s basketball releases nonconference schedule

The Gonzaga women’s basketball team on Thursday released its nonconference schedule, which includes hosting Stanford on Nov. 15.

The Zags (28-6) reached the Sweet 16 last year and finished with a No. 19 ranking in the final USA Today/Coaches poll. They will host nine of their 13 nonconference games at McCarthey Athletic Center.

The Cardinal, who finished ranked No. 14, return to the Lilac City for the first time since 2012. Stanford is 6-0 against Gonzaga all time.

Gonzaga also travels to play No. 9 North Carolina on Nov. 29 in Uncasville, Connecticut as part of the Hall of Fame Challenge.

As part of the challenge, Gonzaga will host West Virginia, USC and Grand Canyon on Nov. 22-24.

The Zags will also travel east to play Dayton, which lost to Connecticut in the Elite Eight. Last year, Gonzaga came from behind to beat Dayton in the season opener.

Following the game with Stanford, the Zags host Eastern Washington on Nov. 19 and they travel to Pullman on Dec. 8 to take on Washington State.

The West Coast Conference schedule has not yet been finalized.

“It is going to be one of the toughest nonconference schedules in the country,” coach Lisa Fortier said in a release. “We wanted to test ourselves early in order to help prepare us for conference and postseason play.”
