Erik Meyer leads San Jose past Shock

SAN JOSE, Calif. – The Spokane Shock improved on their effort from three weeks ago but not nearly enough to slow down the San Jose SaberCats. Former Shock quarterback Erik Meyer completed 27 of 39 passes for 260 yards and five touchdowns as the SaberCats, ranked No. 1 in the Arena Football League’s media poll and power rankings, cruised to a 55-26 win over the Shock on Friday at SAP Center. Spokane (3-7 overall, 0-2 in the Pacific Division) played a competitive first quarter but never showed enough offense to threaten San Jose. Still, it was better than the May 16 home game in which San Jose handed the Shock their worst loss (83-28) in franchise history. The SaberCats (11-0, 4-0 Pacific) never trailed as Meyer ran and threw San Jose to a 28-13 halftime lead. Meyer had scoring runs of 6 and 4 yards in the first half. He also threw TD passes of 13 yards to Reggie Gray and 7 yards to Jeremy Kelley. Meyer’s 9-yard, third-quarter TD pass to Gray extended the lead to 35-13. Spokane QB Warren Smith completed 23 of 41 passes for 231 yards and three TDs. His top target, Anthony Amos, had 11 receptions for 121 yards and one TD. Spokane has lost three of four. The teams will meet again June 26 at the Arena.
