Teacher walkout was a lesson to legislators
I write today to tell you that teachers did not go on “strike” as reported in the newspaper and by many people, including teachers, in Washington. On May 27, we left our classrooms to demonstrate our concern over illegal and inadequate funding of our schools, our classrooms and students.
I was proud to be among those who waved signs and were cheered when passers-by gave us their support for our shared impatience as citizens over the delays of the legislators in doing what the Washington Constitution requires of them. Oh, by the way, required constitutional funding is what we need to better work with our students.
I missed my students. We all did, but when the Legislature failed to act again and again, it became important that we be responsible citizens and act as teachers to offer a lesson to our legislators: reminding them of their obligations.
