The Slice: Sainthood status often goes unspoken

Back in the spring of 1995, The Slice had an item about a 3-year-old Spokane girl referring to a certain Sunday in May as “St. Mother’s Day.”

Well, it has been 20 years and I am still waiting to hear about a local preschooler saying “St. Father’s Day.”

Oh, well. Maybe it’s enough that it was invented here.

Ten shopping days left.

Spokane youth forced to lip-sync:

“Your story of the violin player asked not to play brought up the memory of our son Bradley at Madison grade school (1977),” wrote North Sider Mary Johnson. “During choir practice for the upcoming program, his choir teacher asked him to ‘Sing with his mouth but not his voice.’

“He has sung that way ever since.”

Slice answer: “My father, Bill Nelson, is the worst speller I know,” wrote Ellen Johansen, of Cheney. “Dad is an intelligent, educated man (he has a master’s degree in civil engineering), but he can’t spell. He spells words the way they sound to him. Being an engineer may have something to do with this.

“Dad’s first secretary told him, ‘I have found that the best engineers are usually terrible spellers. I know you’ll be a great engineer because you’re the worst I’ve ever seen.’ ”

Viewer discretion advised: A friend’s son just got a new camcorder. He promptly announced that he intended to make a documentary about middle school.

Then he warned his mom that it will have to be rated “R” for language and sexual innuendo.

If anyone does not like the way Phyllis Rollins makes potato salad: “They have the option of making it themselves.”

But she has been whipping up batches for 60 years and so far everyone seems satisfied.

“Of course, potato salad always tastes better the next day — no matter how it is made.”

Elsewhere on the potato salad front, The Slice heard from Kerry Masters.

“We fight about all the vegetables I add into my potato salad (especially celery and cilantro) but we all agree that vegan potato salad is the best.”

Today’s Slice question: If you are old enough to have been around back then … where were you on D-Day?
