In brief: Arrest follows crash into home

From Staff Reports

An 18-year-old man led Washington State Patrol troopers on a high-speed chase in a stolen car Saturday night before crashing into a Spokane Valley home, according to court documents.

Tony Fawver faces potential criminal charges of attempting to elude police and possessing a stolen vehicle. He was clocked speeding on Interstate 90 in a red Ford SUV and a WSP trooper gave chase, the documents say. Fawver reached speeds of 100 miles per hour on Appleway Boulevard, eventually crashing into the home and fleeing the vehicle, which was reported stolen last week, authorities said. He left his right shoe on the gas pedal.

A sheriff’s dog was called in and helped apprehend Fawver, who has no felony criminal history, according to court records.

School guard gun proposal tabled

With unanimous support from the Spokane City Council, Council President Ben Stuckart tabled discussion about arming guards in local schools for six months while he sought input from the school administration, police department and teachers union.

The delay stops a proposed agreement between Spokane Public Schools and the Spokane Police Department, which would have placed a uniformed police sergeant at the district to supervise up to 17 armed school guards.

Proponents and critics of the proposal suggested the guards would be de facto police officers.

Legislator: No budget agreement

OLYMPIA – Legislative leaders do not have a tentative agreement on how much to spend in the state 2015-17 operating budget, a Senate Republican familiar with negotiations said Monday.

That’s a slightly less optimistic view than the director of the Office of Financial Management offered Friday, when he said legislative budget leaders had reached a tentative agreement on that figure in the ongoing negotiations. It was about halfway between the Senate Republican proposal of $37.9 billion and the House Democratic proposal of $38.4 billion, David Schumacher said after each chamber’s budget committee chairman met with Gov. Jay Inslee.

Legislative budget leaders would have to convince their respective caucuses to go along, Schumacher said.

The agreement was so tentative that it did not survive the weekend.
