Education Notes: Northwest Christian offers sports camp

Northwest Christian Schools is offering a Crusader Summer Sports Camp for students entering first through eighth grades.

The camp, which runs Monday through Wednesday, will introduce students to various sports and improve upon their existing skills. Crusader Camp is run by the high school coaching staff, assistant coaches and high school athletes. Athletes do not have to attend Northwest Christian to attend the camp.

A basketball camp for boys entering first through fourth grade is planned for 8:30-10 a.m. A session for boys entering fifth through eighth grade will be 10:15 a.m.-noon.

A softball camp for girls entering first through eighth grade and a baseball camp for boys in first through fourth grade runs 10:15 a.m.-noon. A baseball session for boys in fifth through eighth grade will run 2:15-3:30 p.m.

A basketball camp for girls in first through eighth grade is planned for 12:30-2 p.m., and a volleyball camp for girls in first through eighth grade will be from 2:15-3:30 p.m.

The camp costs $30 for a single session, with additional sessions costing $20 each. All campers receive a NWC Crusader Camp T-shirt. Students should bring their own ball, water bottle, and lunch or snack as needed.

Moran students awarded in Holocaust Center contest

Six Moran Prairie Elementary School students of teacher Paul Regelbrugge were awarded for their entries in the Pacific Northwest for the Holocaust Center for Humanity’s 2015 Writing, Art and Film Contest.

The winners are:

Rosie Zhou (first place: art; second place: writing), Kolin Almeida (second place: art), Mitchel Freeman (honorable mention: art), Tommy Kimmel (honorable mention: art), Emma Owen (first place: writing) and Blake Layton (honorable mention: writing)

Lewis and Clark students in mock trial

Legal studies students from Lewis and Clark High School recently participated in a mock trial.

The case involved an exchange student from Ireland named Mark Flannigan who was suspended from his high school’s soccer team and the Irish Junior Olympic Team for a minor-in-possession charge.

Flannigan sued for violation of his civil rights, false arrest, unlawful search and seizure and intentional interference with an expected economic gain.

In the end, Flannigan received a $250,000 judgment and was reinstated to both soccer teams.

Paul Frost, Gracie Pollock, Taylor Anthony, Colter Kaley, Dakota Mangum-Turner, Parker Burchett, Alex Vilar and Kemo Alvarez acted as lawyers.

Belma Alagic, Kaitlin Allen, Armando Castenada, Logan Dineen, Emmy Judd, Lorenzo Labrecque, Seraphina McElroy, Nick Mitchell, Madison Nackos, Aslan Paul, Amber Sauberan, Jozef Sloma and Cal Webb acted as witnesses.

Attorney Matt Sanger acted as the judge, and Larry Vance, the founder of the Spokane high school mock trial program, and Tyler Whitney, both with Winston-Cashatt Attorneys at Law, wrote the trial facts and consulted with the class weekly since February.

Montessori bike lab gets SpokeFest grant

SpokeFest recently awarded the Community of Montessori Parents its Education Grant for the 2015-16 school year.

Spokane Public Montessori School at Harvermale will use the grant to fund its Bicycle Laboratory, a working bike shop that will also teach seventh-grade students about bike safety and maintenance.

Hires, retirements at Cheney schools

Cheney Public Schools recently announced two new hires.

Ty McGregor, currently a counselor at Centennial Middle School, will begin a new position as the principal of Sunset Elementary School in July.

Jerald Klinkenberg has been hired as the nutrition services director for the Cheney School District. He has worked as a consultant with the nutritional services program through Empire Health Foundation for three years.

The following staff members are retiring from Cheney High School following the end of the 2014-15 school year: Vicki Brook (head secretary, 23 years of service), Randy Hunt (social studies/photography teacher, 34 years), Kathleen Mayes (special services teacher, 25 years), Meridith Molter (language arts/journalism teacher, 15 years), Jim Missel (athletic director, 14 years), Robin Missel (department secretary, 14 years), Lisa Staub (counselor, 12 years) and Melvie Strampe (art/foreign languages teacher, 30 years).
