Sweeping cold from across the region will bring relief from heat

Today should be the last day of the early season hot spell as a dry cold front sweeps across the region on Friday.

Highs should reach the lower 90s today under sunny skies in Spokane.

Temperatures will drop to the upper 70s to around 80 through Sunday in Spokane. Those highs are still above normal.

Coeur d’Alene and other parts of North Idaho are going to see a faster cool down with highs in the middle 80s today dropping to the 70s through Sunday.

Winds will kick up in the wake of Friday’s cold front, and high fire danger will extend from the Cascades as far east as the West Plains and Palouse region. Gusts from the west could reach 25 mph.

The cold front may lower temperatures, but it also is bringing a shot of very dry air with it, forecasters said.

As the cool marine air spills through the Cascades, areas along the east side the mountains could see winds gusting up to 30 or 35 mph.

Winds should begin to ease on Saturday and fall off even more on Sunday.

About the only place that might see showers is along the Canadian border in mountain areas.

The mountains are going to see much cooler weather with highs near 60 and lows as cool as 40 degrees at about 5,000 feet in elevation.

To the west, highs will be a few degrees warmer than Spokane, but winds will also be stronger.

Low temperatures will go from around 60 tonight in Spokane to near 50 overnight Friday through Sunday.

For early next week, the National Weather Service is saying that an unprecedented area of high air pressure is likely to form over Alaska, causing a low pressure area to form over the Pacific Northwest with highs in the upper 70s to lower 80s. Little to no rain is expected.

The normal high for today in Spokane is 72 with a normal low of 49.
