Key wrote lyrics, not music

I agree that too many people get creative when singing the national anthem, and I would prefer that it be sung more traditionally.

I do want to mention, however, that Francis Scott Key wrote the words of the national anthem as a poem. He did not write the music, as has been suggested in a couple of recent letters. The melody came from a popular British song of the time written by John Stafford Smith.
