Juneteenth call to action

The 2015 Juneteenth Celebration’s theme is “Cultivate Our Roots to Strengthen Our Branches: What Legacy Are You Leaving?” This call to action by Spokane’s Juneteenth committee is timely given local and national upheaval this week: issues of race, identity, integrity, violence and, ultimately, who we are.

Juneteenth is a celebration and remembrance of the abolition of slavery in our nation. At the Friday awards banquet, the Father’s Day breakfast on Saturday morning, followed by the free community event Saturday afternoon at Liberty Park, we each and all have opportunities to rise above the distinctions and differences that are dividing us and join together to celebrate and to commit to our shared history and the goals of freedom, safety and justice for all. The call to action is “just do it.”
