Star-studded cast brings fresh take to ‘True Detective’

“True Detective”: Talk about a wildly difficult task: How do you deliver a fresh crime mystery that can live up to last year’s sensational saga? A new cast, which includes Colin Farrell, Vince Vaughn, Rachel McAdams and Taylor Kitsch, will give it a go as the setting shifts to Southern California. It’s there that a bizarre murder brings together three law enforcement officers and a money-hungry mobster. 9 p.m. Sunday, HBO.

SUNDAY: Are you ready for “Celebrity Family Feud”? Host Steve Harvey gives us a new twist on the old game show as famous folks and their families compete against each other for charity. 8 p.m., ABC.

SUNDAY: Nearly 40 years after “Poldark” became one of the earliest “Masterpiece” hits, a swashbuckling new version arrives. Aidan Turner plays the dashing squire Ross Poldark, and original star Robin Ellis appears as the Rev. Halse. 9 p.m., PBS.

SUNDAY: Jack Black comes to television in “The Brink.” It’s a dark satire about a State Department minion who stumbles into a geopolitical crisis. Tim Robbins also stars in the show, which debuts right after the series premiere of “Ballers.” 10:30 p.m., HBO.

MONDAY: “So You Think You Can Dance” moves to the Big Apple for the fourth and final round of auditions before callbacks. Hey, if you can make it there . (8 p.m., Fox).

TUESDAY: Here’s an episode that just might get its hooks into you: When a tournament-leading angler is killed on “Rizzoli & Isles,” Jane and Maura are plunged into the high-stakes world of competitive bass fishing. 9 p.m., TNT.

WEDNESDAY: “Big Brother,” the reality show that turns its contestants into human lab rats, returns for another go-round. Host Julie Chen welcomes a new group of back-stabbing residents. 8 p.m., CBS.

WEDNESDAY: “Mr. Robot” is a new high-tech thriller about a cybersecurity engineer (Rami Malek) who comes to a crossroads when the mysterious leader (Christian Slater) of an underground hacker group recruits him to destroy the firm he’s paid to protect. 10 p.m., USA.

THURSDAY: “BOOM!” is an explosive new game show that challenges players to defuse phony “bombs” by answering trivia questions within a strict time limit. A wrong move and they get splattered with some mystery goop. 8 p.m., Fox.

THURSDAY: Will “Under the Dome” get any more ludicrous and unintentionally funny? We can only dream. The residents of Chester’s Mill continue their misadventures tonight. 9 p.m., CBS.

FRIDAY: On tonight’s “Defiance,” Nolan (Grant Bowler) and Amanda (Julie Benz) are captured while excavating a buried weapons cache. Hey, no one said life in 2047 would be easy. 8 p.m., Syfy.

SATURDAY: “A Country Wedding” is a film about a country-music star who returns to his hometown to sell the house he grew up in. Once there, he reconnects and with a childhood friend and – you guessed it – some old feelings resurface. 9 p.m., Hallmark.
