Mookie Betts doubled to extend his career-best hitting streak to 13 games and scored on Brock Holt’s 10th-inning single to give Boston a road victory over Tampa Bay in St. Petersburg, Florida. Betts lifted a perfectly placed fly ball that dropped down the left-field line to give him the Red Sox’s longest hitting since Jacoby Ellsbury had a 19-game streak in 2013. Holt followed with his game-winning hit off Steve Geltz.

Chris Young had a go-ahead, three-run homer among three hits in his hometown, lifting New York to a win over host Houston. New York managed just three hits through the first six innings and trailed 2-0 before Carlos Beltran and Garrett Jones had back-to-back singles with one out in the seventh to chase Houston rookie starter Vince Velasquez. He was replaced by Will Harris, who was greeted with Young’s shot to the Crawford Boxes in left field to put the Yankees on top.

Kendrys Morales and Alex Gordon homered to back Edinson Volquez, and Kansas City beat Oakland in Oakland, California. Unlike when these two teams met in April, when there were bench-clearing scuffles in all three games, there were no signs of lingering animosity. A few players from both clubs exchanged hugs and handshakes before the game, and both managers downplayed talk of any carry-over effect.

Noah Syndergaard pitched eight sharp innings and host New York got exactly the help it needed when Johnny Cueto suddenly lost the strike zone, edging Cincinnati. It was 1-all in the fifth when Dilson Herrera tripled with two outs. Cueto, pitching with eight days’ rest to give his aching right elbow some extra rest, hadn’t walked a batter all game until walking Granderson, Eric Campbell and Lucas Duda to force home the go-ahead run.

Cardinals 3, Cubs 2 (10)

Peter Bourjos scored the winning run from third on a throwing error by Mike Baxter in the 10th inning to lift host St. Louis to a win over Chicago. Bourjos began the inning with a double, Kolten Wong followed with a single off the second base bag and Matt Carpenter was walked to load the bases. Jhonny Peralta then hit a routine grounder to second base, where right fielder Baxter was positioned with the bases loaded and no one out to give the Cubs five infielders. He had plenty of time, but threw wildly to the plate.
