Shadow top Vancouver, close gap in league race

CAMAS, Wash. – Jesse Retan and Anthony Mota scored second-half goals and the Spokane Shadow tightened the race in the Evergreen Premier League soccer chase with a 2-0 victory over the Vancouver Victory on Saturday night at Doc Harris Stadium.

Retan and Mota both picked up their second goals of the season, Retan scoring in the 58th minute off a cross from Avi Singh, and Mota in the 70th.

The Shadow’s leading scorer, Karl Muelheims, and teammate Chance Bukoski, left the match in the first half with injuries.

Third-place Spokane improved to 6-1-2 for 20 points. Vancouver (7-3-1) has 22 points and first-place South Sound (7-1-3), which tied Yakima United on Saturday, has 24.

The Shadow have five matches left, including today’s 6 p.m. game at Yakima. They then wait until July 11 to play Wenatchee at Spokane Falls CC.
