Wood Bat Classic draws 94 teams

The annual Spokane/Coeur d’Alene 4th of July Legion Wood Bat Classic begins Thursday and concludes Monday in the Spokane area.

There are three tournaments in one – for senior teams, junior teams and U-16 teams. A total of 94 teams are playing in the tournaments on fields ranging from Cheney to Lake City.

The championship game is Monday at Al K. Jackson Field at 2:30.

Track

Lauren McCluskey scored a personal best in the heptathlon at the U.S. Junior Track and Field Championships in Eugene, Oregon, June 25-26.

McCluskey, who just graduated from Pullman, placed 10th with 4,556 points in the competition for under 20 year olds. She competed against a group of six college athletes and four high school athletes.

Here were McCluskey’s times/marks: 100-meter hurdles (15.14 seconds); shot put (33 feet, 2 inches); high jump (5-2 ¼); 200 (27.35); long jump (16-6); javelin (101-1, a personal best); and the 800 (2:26.88).

Her overall scored moved her to 13th nationally for her age. She was 14th.

McCluskey will compete in the Junior Olympic nationals at the University of North Florida in Jacksonville July 27-August 2.

Baseball

Two North Idaho youth will be among 24 finalists in the Major League Baseball Pitch, Hit and Run program during All-Star game festivities.

Trevor Cogley of Hayden will compete against two others in the boys 9-10 age division.

Haley Loffer of Hayden will compete against two others in the girls 13-14 age division.

The competition takes place Monday, July 13, at the Great American Ball Park in Cincinnati, Ohio.
