Shockers win second straight conference title

MEN’S BASKETBALL: No. 11 Wichita State didn’t waste its time in the college basketball spotlight.

The Shockers won their second straight Missouri Valley Conference title with a 74-60 win over No. 10 Northern Iowa on Saturday at Koch Arena in Wichita, Kansas.

The day started with ESPN’s College GameDay drawing more than 6,000 fans to Koch Arena. It continued through WSU’s superb close to the first half and an equally strong start to the second. Northern Iowa made a push, cutting the lead to four points, before WSU finished with nine solid, sometimes spectacular minutes to knock the Panthers into second place.

Ron Baker scored 17 points for the Shockers (27-3, 17-1).

Seth Tuttle scored 16 points to lead Northern Iowa (27-3, 16-2), which had a 16-game winning streak snapped.

Northern Iowa entered the game allowing 53.8 points per game, fourth best nationally.

Undefeated Kentucky clinches SEC title: Andrew Harrison and Trey Lyles each scored 18 points, and top-ranked Kentucky rolled past No. 18 Arkansas 84-67 in Lexington, Kentucky, to clinch the Southeastern Conference regular-season title.

The matchup of the SEC’s top two teams belonged to the undefeated Wildcats (29-0, 16-0) on both ends as they earned their 46th league title and halted a three-game losing streak against the Razorbacks (23-6, 12-4).

Kansas State beats second Top 25 team in week: Wesley Iwundu capped a 22-9 scoring run with a two-handed slam that gave host Kansas State (15-15, 8-9 Big 12) a 70-69 win over No. 12 Iowa State (20-8, 10-6) and back-to-back Top 25 wins.

Nigel Johnson led the Wildcats with 17 points after scoring a career-high 20 points in an upset of No. 8 Kansas on Monday night.

Baylor wins fourth straight: Taurean Prince scored 20 points and No. 19 Baylor (22-7, 10-6 Big 12) won its fourth consecutive game, leading throughout in a 78-66 victory over injury-plagued No. 20 West Virginia (22-7, 10-6) in Waco, Texas.

Rico Gathers had 17 points and 10 rebounds, his league-leading 15th double-double this season, more than twice as many as any other Big 12 player.

Somber Knicks defeat slumping Raptors

NBA: Tim Hardaway Jr. scored 22 points, Langston Galloway made a clinching 3-pointer and the New York Knicks ended a sad day for the franchise with a 103-98 victory over Toronto, the Raptors’ season-high fifth straight loss.

After beginning the night with a moment of silence for former Knicks forward Anthony Mason, who died Saturday, the team finished it by celebrating its second straight victory.

Lou Williams scored 22 points for the Raptors, who fell into a tie with Chicago for second place in the Eastern Conference and are just a half-game ahead of Cleveland for fourth.

Warriors’ Festus Ezeli suspended: Golden State Warriors center Festus Ezeli was suspended for one game without pay for initiating an altercation with Toronto’s Tyler Hansbrough on Friday night.

Ezeli will sit out tonight’s game in Boston.

Unranked Iowa State upsets No. 3 Baylor

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL: Senior Fallon Ellis scored a career-high 18 points and unranked Iowa State stunned Baylor 76-71, handing the Lady Bears their second straight loss after a 26-1 start.

Nina Davis scored 16 points for the Lady Bears, who dropped consecutive games for just the second time since 2010.

Beavers earn Pac-12 title: Sydney Weise had 23 points, including a season-high seven 3-pointers, and No. 7 Oregon State (26-3, 16-2) clinched its first Pac-12 regular-season title with a 73-55 victory over No. 24 California (21-8, 13-5) in Corvallis, Oregon.

California needed a win to secure the No. 3 seed in next week’s conference tournament. Oregon State has claimed the top seed in the tournament.

Harrington has first Tour lead in five years

GOLF: Padraig Harrington is a 36-hole leader on the PGA Tour for the first time in nearly five years and he knows he has a long way to go.

A vicious storm at the Honda Classic in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida made his weekend even longer.

American leads Honda LPGA: American Stacy Lewis had a 1-over 73 for a one-stroke lead over South Korea’s Amy Yang in the Honda LPGA Thailand.

Road-tested Red Wings cage Predators

NHL: The Detroit Red Wings showed the mental toughness their coach likes so much, ending a hard week’s work by upending the NHL’s top team.

Two third-period goals enabled the Wings to head home from Nashville, Tennessee, with a 4-3 victory over the Nashville Predators, whose 89 points lead the league.

The Wings have played six straight games on the road.

Streaking Montreal shuts out Toronto: Manny Malhotra scored his first goal with the Canadiens, Carey Price, the NHL leader in save percentage and goals-against average, made 30 saves for his sixth shutout of the season, and host Montreal, winners of four straight, beat the Toronto Maple Leafs 4-0.

The Maple Leafs had a two-game winning streak snapped.

Federer beats familiar foe for Dubai title

MISCELLANY: Defending champion Roger Federer won his seventh Dubai Championships title and second of the year defeating No. 1 Novak Djokovic 6-3, 7-5.

Federer came into the match needing five more aces to become just the fourth player in history to serve 9,000 career aces. He served 12 in the match.

Dungey races to 3rd AMA Supercross win of year: Ryan Dungey raced to his third AMA Supercross victory of the season, easily holding off Eli Tomac at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta.

Dungey, the KTM rider who finished second behind Chad Reed last week in the Atlanta opener, extended his season lead to 30 points over Honda’s Trey Canard after nine of 17 races.

Hill wins in USA Indoor: Stealing a peek first over his right shoulder and then his left, Ryan Hill held off hard charges by Ben Blankenship and Evan Jager to win the first two-mile run in the USA Indoor Track & Field Championships in 84 years.

In the women’s mile, Shannon Rowbury took control just past the halfway point and won in 4:34.40.

U.S. wins first women’s bobsled title: Elana Meyers Taylor and pusher Cherrelle Garrett beat three German crews to win the first World Championship title in the women’s bobsled for the United States in Winterberg, Germany.

Austrians sweep downhill: Hannes Reichelt led an Austrian sweep of a shortened downhill race on the Kandahar slope for his 10th career World Cup victory.
