In brief: Memorial service set for former police chief

Kl-ahFriends of former Spokane Police Chief Terry Mangan have organized a memorial service for the late chief for 3 p.m. Sunday at the Spokane Police Academy, 2302 N. Waterworks Ave.

Mangan, who served as chief from 1987 until 1998, died in December at age 76 following a long illness.

The service is being hosted by the Spokane Law Enforcement Museum. The organization that runs the museum has members who served under Mangan.

Former Spokane Police Chief Roger Bragdon is scheduled to speak along with Pierce County Sheriff Paul Pastor.

EV board sees finalists for superintendent

EAST VALLEY – The East Valley School District board of directors has been meeting with finalists for the superintendent position, and may announce its pick as early as tonight.

The school board is hosting a community forum at 7 p.m. today in the library at East Valley High School, 15711 E. Wellesley Ave. The new superintendent might be named after that forum.

The three finalists are:

Tom Gresch, interim superintendent for East Valley School District.

Kathryn Orozco, superintendent, Whitefish School District, Montana.

Kelly Shea, superintendent, Sequim School District, Washington.

The new superintendent will lead a district with more than 4,000 students, seven schools, 480 staff members and an annual operating budget of $44.4 million.

Postal Service to hold free paper shredding

SPOKANE VALLEY – The U.S. Postal Inspection Service is hosting a free document shredding event from 7-10 a.m.March 6 at the Metro Post Office parking lot, 5511 E. Alki Ave.

Participants may bring up to 10 boxes of documents for shredding.

Musicians present ‘Worth’-ship concert

MILLWOOD – Join tenor Stephan Craig, Gary Eller on banjo and Sean Rogers on piano and organ for an evening of “Worth”-ship concert 3 p.m. March 8 at Millwood Community Presbyterian Church, 3223 N. Marguerite Road.

The musicians will talk about what music means to them and share their personal stories, as well as compositions and improvisations.

Women’s symposium will be Saturday

SPOKANE – The 2015 International Women’s Day Symposium, sponsored by area colleges and universities, will be 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday at EWU/WSU Spokane Campus Academic Center, 310 N. Riverpoint Blvd.

Keynote speaker is Dr. Bipasha Biswas, of Eastern Washington University’s School of Social Work.

The symposium features other guest speakers, Bollywood dancing, workshops and discussions about women’s issues.

Food and beverages will be provided. Please bring donations of new, unopened feminine hygiene products which will be donated to homeless women.

Smart Justice to host talk on race equity

DOWNTOWN – Smart Justice Spokane is hosting the first of a series of quarterly meetings at 6 p.m. Wednesday in the lobby of the Community Building, 35 W. Main Ave.

Glenn Harris, president of the Center for Social Inclusion, is the presenter.

He will be talking about how to create racial equity as part of reforming the criminal justice system and the role of community advocates working with local governments toward racial equity.
