Sean Hartnett’s arm, Ian Sagdal’s bat lead Cougars to win over Sacred Heart

Sean Hartnett threw seven solid innings and Ian Sagdal drove in three runs as the Washington State Cougars defeated the Sacred Heart Pioneers 5-1 in the opener of a four-game series Thursday night at Bailey-Brayton Field in Pullman.

Sagdal finished with two hits, and right fielder Wes Hattan and shortstop Jack Strunc each scored a pair of runs for the Cougars (8-5).

Harnett scattered five hits, all singles, allowing one run while striking out eight as he improved to 3-1 on the season.

Ryan Walker worked the final two innings for Washington State. He struck out one and walked one, while not allowing a hit.

Sacred Heart (0-5) opened the scoring in the first inning, when Jayson Sullivan’s RBI groundout scored Jesus Medina from third base.

The Cougars answered with a run in the bottom of the first, before pulling ahead with two more scores in the second.

Golf season starts

Liberty Lake Golf Course, MeadowWood Golf Course and the Back 9 at Hangman Valley Golf Course all open today.

Hangman Valley will be fully open for the season on Saturday.
