Photo: ‘Aggressive schedule’ to repair tunnel borer
Tunneling by August: A worker inside a metal cage is lowered into an access pit holding the damaged digging machine for the Highway 99 tunnel project Monday in Seattle. Crews will spend the rest of March disconnecting and dismantling the front of the machine so they can bring it to the surface in three pieces and repair the broken parts. “If all of that goes according to plan, we could begin tunneling in August,” said Chris Dixon, Seattle Tunnel Partners project manager. “It’s a very aggressive schedule.”
