Jim Kershner’s This Day in History

From our archives, 100 years ago

Two railroad workers found Frank Myers and Michael McCann ransacking a boxcar and attempting to steal some shoes.

The workers confronted the men and caught McCann. Myers, however, tried to hide under a wooden platform at the nearby Avery Machinery Co.

When police arrived, they could see nothing but an arm sticking out from under the platform. “Come on out!” they ordered, but Myers responded only with abusive language.

Myers was wedged in so tightly he couldn’t move.

Officers finally freed Myers by prying up two wooden planks from the platform. He and McCann were booked on larceny charges.

From the accident file: Fred Toney, 12, went out to the family’s stable at Greenacres to milk a cow. The cow kicked him in the head, knocking him out.

When her son failed to return, Mrs. Toney walked out to the stable. When she saw her son unconscious on the ground, the shock apparently sent her into convulsions.

A daughter went to check on them both. She found Fred, still stunned on the ground, and her mother in convulsions. Mrs. Toney died soon afterward. An autopsy indicated a cerebral hemorrhage.
