Education Notebook: Student headed to state geography bee

Marshall Roll, a seventh-grader at St. George’s School, is a semifinalist for the 2015 Washington National Geographic State Bee.

Roll won the St. George’s geography bee and then submitted a qualifying test to the National Geographic Society. His test scores, plus his status as school champion, qualified him to be one of 100 students to compete at the state geography bee.

Each state champion will receive $100, the National Geographic Atlas of the World, 10th Edition, a medal and a trip to Washington, D.C., where they will represent their state in the National Geographic Bee Championship.

The national champion will receive a $50,000 college scholarship, lifetime membership in the society and an all-expenses paid trip to the Galapagos Islands.

The semifinal contest will be March 27 at Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma.

‘Wizard of Oz’ opens at NWC

Northwest Christian School’s production of “The Wizard of Oz” opens today at 7 p.m.

The musical follows Dorothy, her dog Toto and the eclectic group of characters she meets while traveling to the Emerald City in an attempt to return home to Kansas.

The cast includes Hannah Underwood as Dorothy, Jonah Taylor as the Scarecrow, Adam Gaines as the Tin Man, Jordan Seiersen as Auntie Em, Kiley Mossey as the Wicked Witch, Shea Montgomery as the Wizard of Oz, Noah Raver as the Cowardly Lion, Erin Whitley as Glinda and Andrew Wells as Uncle Henry.

Other performances are 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and Wednesday through March 20. A matinee performance is planned for 3 p.m. Sunday. All shows will be at the school, 5104 E. Bernhill Road, Colbert. Tickets are $10.

‘Pajama Game’ at St. George’s

The St. George’s production of “The Pajama Game” will open Wednesday.

This musical comedy chronicles the “Romeo and Juliet”-like story of factory worker Babe and superintendent Sid as they fight for love and a 7 ½-cent raise.

The cast includes Josias Michalko as Hines, Cade Martin as Prez, Zach Withers as Joe/Anderson, Hunter Hyde as Hasler, Allison Milbrath as Gladys, John Hatheway as Sid, Malinda Wagstaff as Mabel, Truman Harris as First Helper/Pop, Mickey Zhang as Charlie, Ryan Hayes as Ollie, Natalie Johnson as Babe, Caroline Hammett as Mae and Angela Hickey as Max.

The other Factory Girls will be played by Delaney Ennis, Alanna Foster, Susie Jones, Katherine Lee, Jennifer Milbrath, Anna Nowland, Hayley Poutiatine and Anya Walker.

Performances are Wednesday, March 20 and 21 at the school, 2929 W. Waikiki Road. All performances begin at 7 p.m.

‘Funny Girl’ unfolds at CV

Central Valley High School’s production of “Funny Girl” premieres Wednesday.

“Funny Girl” follows the career of radio and movie star Fanny Brice from the early 1900s through World War 1.

The cast includes Emma Larson as Fanny Brice, Colton Westley as Flo Ziegfeld, Austin Burrowes as Nick Arstein, Madison Ambriz as Mrs. Brice, Anika Martin as Mrs. Strakosh and Christopher Tamayo as Eddie.

Performances are Wednesday through March 21 and March 25-28 at 7:30 at the school, 821 S. Sullivan Road.

Donor helps singing group

On March 6, Gregory Utecht presented Sunrise Elementary Solar Energy with a check for $2,500.

Utecht, a local farmer, is a winner in the Monsanto-funded America’s Farmers Grow Communities, which gives farmers the opportunity to win $2,500 to be donated to the nonprofit of their choice.

Solar Energy is a singing group of 65 fourth- and fifth-graders that performs at events throughout the community.
