In brief: Work to begin early on sewer

NORTHWEST SPOKANE – Thanks to warmer temperatures, the city plans to start construction early on a combined sewer overflow tank on Northwest Boulevard.

Construction on the 900,000 tank is scheduled to start Monday at Providence Avenue.

The $9.5 million project also includes installation of a new sewer main, new pavement, new sidewalks and landscaping.

Northwest Boulevard will be closed from H Street to Garland Avenue. Portions of I Street and Providence will also be closed. The detour route uses G Street and Garland.

Bloomsday clinics to start Saturday

SPOKANE – Free Bloomsday training clinics start Saturday at Spokane Falls Community College, 3410 W. Fort George Wright Drive.

The program is Saturdays through April 25. The clinics start at 8:30 a.m. with training tips, followed by a warm up with a trainer at 8:45 and a run at 9.

The runs start at 1 mile, increasing by a mile each week. The routes are out-and-back, allowing participants to turn around at any point, and are staffed with volunteers to provide traffic control, water stations and first aid.

City of Spokane launches website

SPOKANE – The city launched its new website on Tuesday.

The address is still www.spokanecity.org.

Users will find a new directory, some changes to the online utility billing system and thousands of new pages of content.

Street sweeping starts in Valley

SPOKANE VALLEY – Regular street sweeping in residential areas has begun and will continue through May.

Most sweeping will happen between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. on weekdays.

Residents are encouraged to move vehicles and basketball hoops out of the way, and to keep vegetation and bushes trimmed back from the curb and out of the right-of-way.

Overhead vegetation should be trimmed to 14 feet above the street.

The spring sweeping keeps debris from clogging storm drains and improves air quality by removing dust and particulates that may be blown into the air.

SCC offers small business camp

SPOKANE – Spokane Community College is offering an eight-week workshop for aspiring and beginning business owners.

Small Business Boot Camp will cover such topics as determining the feasibility of a business idea, calculating start-up costs and marketing.

The workshop meets 5:30 to 8 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, April 14 through June 4 at SCC, 1810 N. Greene St. The program costs $525. Participants must register by April 7.

Fundraiser to help child care center

NORTHWEST SPOKANE – Spring Festivals Around the World, a fundraiser for Every Child’s Place, will be celebrated from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday at Hamilton Film Studios, 1427 W. Dean Ave.

Finger foods and beverages will be served, and there will be children’s activity tables, raffles and auction items.

The event also features a film premier about Every Child’s Place – a high quality child care center working within the model of attachment, inclusion and multicultural competency.

Tickets are $10 or $30 per family of up to five people. At the door: $15, or $40 per family of up to five people.

Business group to host Wick

SPOKANE VALLEY – The Spokane Valley Business Association meets 7:30 a.m. today at the Valley Fire Department’s Administration Building, 2120 N. Wilbur Road.

Councilman Ben Wick is the featured speaker and he will present news and updates from Olympia, the Barker Road Interchange and the long-range Bridging the Valley project.
