MLB notes: Texas Rangers pitcher Yu Darvish will get another opinion

Yu Darvish will get one more opinion before the ace pitcher will likely have season-ending elbow surgery.

Texas Rangers general manager Jon Daniels said Dr. David Altchek, the New York Mets’ team physician and an expert in Tommy John surgery, recommended the procedure after examining Darvish on Tuesday.

The Rangers will have Dr. James Andrews review images of Darvish’s elbow before they make a final decision. An MRI exam last Friday revealed partially torn ligaments and inflammation.

Ferrell plans to play

Comedian Will Ferrell will play every position while making appearances at five Arizona spring training games today. He plans to play for all 10 teams involved.

Rodriguez homers

Alex Rodriguez hit his first home run since returning to the New York Yankees following a one-season drug suspension.

Rodriguez has five hits in 11 at-bats (.455) this spring.

Kluber signs deal

A.L. Cy Young Award winner Corey Kluber signed a one-year contract with Cleveland.

Kluber went 18-9 with a 2.44 ERA and 269 strikeouts in 2014.

Minor will start on DL

Atlanta lefty Mike Minor will start the season on the disabled list because of inflammation in his left rotator cuff. Minor developed tightness after throwing batting practice last week.

Clearing the bases

Jordan Zimmermann struck out four while pitching into the third inning for the Washington Nationals. … David Price yielded four runs on four hits – all for extra bases – while striking out two in two innings for the Detroit Tigers. … Matt Harvey allowed two runs and six hits over 2 2/3 innings for the Mets. … Jered Weaver allowed three runs and five hits in three-plus innings for the Los Angeles Angels. … Zack Greinke gave up two runs on two hits and two walks in two innings for the Los Angeles Dodgers. … Jon Lester pitched three-hit ball for three shutout innings for the Chicago Cubs.
