Cougs defeat No. 6 Trojans

Joe Pistorese allowed two runs on seven hits in a complete-game effort and the Washington State Cougars (12-6, 1-1) rallied for a 4-2 victory over the sixth-ranked Southern California Trojans (16-3, 1-1) in Pac-12 action in Los Angeles on Saturday.

The Cougars erased a 2-0 deficit with a three-run fifth inning.

Shane Matheny and Shea Donlin opened the fifth with back-to-back singles. Ian Sagdal singled home Matheny and Donlin scored on an errant throw at home on the play. P.J. Jones singled to drive in Sagdal and that was all Pistorese needed.

Pistorese (3-1) notched eight strikeouts in winning his third straight start.

• Tyler Davis threw eight shutout innings before tiring in the ninth and Jack Meggs delivered a two-out three-run double in the fourth to propel the Washington Huskies (13-6, 1-1) to a 4-1 victory over the 11th-ranked UCLA Bruins in Pac-12 Conference play in Los Angeles.

The win snapped a 13-game losing streak at Jackie Robinson Stadium for the Huskies, dating to May 29, 2005.

• Jeremy Druffel stroked a two-run home run and Dalton Carter had three hits and a pair of RBIs to help lead the Whitworth Pirates (11-8, 5-4) to a 10-4 win over the 19th-ranked Pacific Lutheran Lutes (14-6, 8-4) in Northwest Conference action in Parkland, Washington.

Whitworth scored eight runs off the Lutes’ bullpen and avoided a sweep in the three-game series.

• Christian Cecilio went the distance – scattering seven hits while fanning nine – to guide the visiting San Francisco Dons (6-13, 1-1) ) to a 2-0 win over the Gonzaga Bulldogs (10-9, 1-1) in West Coast Conference action.

Dustin Breshears paced the Bulldogs with two hits and a walk.

• Logan Jackson’s three-run first-inning double got the Community Colleges of Spokane Sasquatch (7-2) off and running and Evan Douglas’ fourth home run of the season capped a six-run fifth en route to a 13-0 nonconference victory over the visiting Clark Penguins.

Adam Paulson and Kyle Murray teamed up to throw CC Spokane’s first shutout of the season.

Softball

Makayla Lefever (7-2) fired a complete-game shutout, allowing three singles and striking out five, to lead the Whitworth Pirates (15-5, 8-2) to a 5-0 victory over the Pacific Boxers (13-7, 6-4) and a sweep of their Northwest Conference doubleheader in Spokane.

The Pirates rode Kayla Batastini’s three-run home run to a 4-2 win in the first game.
