San Francisco scores first run off GU’s David Bigelow to beat Gonzaga
San Francisco finally figured out Gonzaga’s David Bigelow and parlayed it into a 4-3 victory Monday at GU and a 2-1 margin in the rain-interrupted West Coast Conference-opening baseball series.
Bigelow, Gonzaga’s senior relief pitcher, ran a no-hit streak to 92/3 innings by retiring the side in order in the sixth, seventh and eighth before the Dons got to him to snap a 3-3 tie.
Derek Atkinson, who had a three-run homer in the third, hit a leadoff single in the ninth and three batters later Ross Puskarich doubled to score Atkinson from second with the go-ahead run and the first run off Bigelow this season.
Sam Brown hit his first homer for GU, a solo shot in the fifth, in a 2-for-4 day.
College softball
Peyton McMahon’s third home run of the season, a two-run shot in the bottom of the first, starterd the Pirates on the way to a 5-1 victory over visiting Pacific in the second game of a Northwest Conference doubleheader on Monday.
The Boxers (14-8, 7-5 NWC) won the opener 3-1 with three unearned runs thanks to an equal number of errors by the Pirates.
Makayla Lefever (8-2) pitched a two-hitter for the Pirates (16-6, 9-3) in the second game as the Whits won the rain-interrupted four-game series 3-1.
Shannon Wessel had a 4-for-6 day for Whitworth that included two runs scored, an RBI, a double and two stolen bases.
