Area roundup: Gonzaga’s rally falls just short in bottom of ninth

Gonzaga left the potential tying run on second base after a four-run ninth inning Thursday, dropping a 6-5 West Coast Conference baseball game to BYU at Patterson Complex. Tyler Frost’s two-out, two-run single to center allowed the Bulldogs (10-11, 1-3) to cut BYU’s lead to 6-5. Michael Rucker of BYU (10-11, 3-1), who allowed five hits and four earned runs in the ninth, ended the threat with a strikeout.

Swimming

Whitworth’s Wes Tatum placed eighth in the men’s 100-yard butterfly during the NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championships at Shenendoah, Texas.

Tatum finished in 48.84 seconds and earned All-American honors. He broke his school record with a time of 48.70 in the preliminaries.

Men’s basketball

Whitworth sophomore guard Kenny Love, the Northwest Conference Player of the Year, was named a Division III third-team All-American by the National Association of Basketball Coaches.

Love averaged 14.7 points, 3.4 rebounds and 2.4 assists per game during the NWC season. He scored 20 points in the NWC tournament championship game and averaged 11.5 points, 4.5 rebounds and 2.5 assists in two Division III tourney games.

Track and field

Whitworth juniors Dakota Kliamovich and Kerry Wright picked up wins during the opening day of the university’s Buc Scoring Invite at Boppel Track.

Kliamovich won the women’s hammer throw with a season-best effort of 170 feet, 2 inches. Wright won the women’s javelin at 144-1.

Gonzaga swept the 5,000-meter races. Danny Lunder took the men’s race in 14 minutes, 58.52 seconds, beating teammate Matthew Crichlow in a photo finish, and Shelby Mills won the women’s race in 17:21.20.
