Founding not based on Scripture

Steve Massey (March 14) agrees wholeheartedly that a Christian worldview is not only right, but best, for any state or nation. I disagree. Substitute any other religion and I still disagree.

There are excellent reasons why we have the Declaration of Independence, the Bill of Rights and the U.S. Constitution. Those documents were not based on anyone’s holy book. They were based upon ideas from the Magna Carta, Native American rules of governing and other ideas recognizing the rights of individuals, as opposed to their place in the religions of the time.

Massey states that the founding principles of our nation are “inarguably” based on his religion. It has been argued by many that the folks who wrote the founding documents were not all Christians. The authors were certainly not interested in having any religious body governing the state.

It is amazing that folks who promote their religion as the basis for better government do not take the next step and wonder if they would be happy if a different religion from theirs was prescribed as the best way of governing. We know that would not be countenanced. The law works best when based upon evidence, not Scripture.
