Area roundup: Pirates sweep away Missionaries

Designated hitter Matthew Nelson drove in five runs on the day to spark the Whitworth Pirates (16-8, 10-4) to a doubleheader sweep over the Whitman Missionaries (4-16, 3-11) in Northwest Conference baseball action on Wednesday in Walla Walla.

Nelson and Skyler Lookabill drove in three runs apiece in the opener to lead the Whits to an 11-5 victory.

In the nightcap, Nelson had two hits and two RBIs and Joshua Davis went 4 for 6 with an RBI and two runs scored to propel the Pirates to a 10-6 win.

• The Community Colleges of Spokane Sasquatch (12-4, 1-1) and the Yakima Valley Yaks (12-3, 1-1) split a Northwest Athletic Conference-opening doubleheader in Yakima.

Adam Paulson allowed one run on six hits with seven strikeouts in seven innings of work to lead the Sasquatch to an 8-1 victory in the opener. Lucas Denney had three hits, including two doubles, and drove in two runs, while Tyler Thorson had two hits and two RBIs to supply the offense for CCS.

In the second game, the Yaks scored a run in the bottom of the 10th inning to earn a 3-2 decision. Logan Jackson and Trevor Mahn drove in eighth-inning runs for the Sasquatch.

• The Gonzaga Bulldogs’ nonconference game against the visiting Washington Huskies was rained out. No makeup date has been announced.

Women’s golf

Ciera Min and Han We shot 3-over-par 219s to tie for ninth place and help the Gonzaga Bulldogs finish seventh in the 15-team Spring Break Classic at the Bay Course in Kapalua, Hawaii.

Andrea Wong (7-under 209) and Paige Lee (4-under 212) finished 1-2 to guide UC Davis (1-under 863) to the team title by eight strokes over runner-up Texas. Gonzaga shot an 889. GU’s Alice Kim (220) tied for 17th.

Softball

The Whitworth Pirates (18-6) rolled to a nonconference doubleheader sweep over the Eastern Oregon Mountaineers (12-13) in La Grande, Oregon.

Kayla Batastini went 2 for 3 with a home run, double and three RBIs and Shannon Wessel had two hits, including a triple and three RBIs to power the Pirates to an 11-3 win in the opener.

In the nightcap, Wessel had a homer, double and a pair of RBIs and Megan John and Peyton McMahon each drove in two runs to lead Whitworth to a 7-1 victory.
