In brief: Prince Bishop bests California Chrome at Dubai World Cup

Horse racing: Prince Bishop pulled away from favorite California Chrome on the home straight and won the $10 million Dubai World Cup by 2 3/4 lengths at Meydan Racecourse in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

Starting from the inside post, jockey William Buick rode Prince Bishop to his first victory on dirt. It was the fourth attempt for the 8-year-old horse in the world’s richest race.

“I can’t express what I am feeling right now,” Buick said. “It’s very surreal. I feel a bit numb at the moment, but I’m sure when I get home and relax it will sink in.”

Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner California Chrome was no match for Prince Bishop when the horse blew past him over the new dirt surface. Earlier, Christophe Soumillon rode Dolniya to victory in the $6 million Dubai Sheema Classic, having earlier won the $2 million UAE Derby atop Mubtaahij, the 4-year-old Irish-bred colt.

Materialty wins $1 million Florida Derby at Gulfstream: Materiality is still unbeaten after a victory in the $1 million Florida Derby at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, Florida. Now a winner in all three of his outings, Materiality held off Upstart yet again and finished the 1 1/8 miles in 1 minute, 52.30 seconds with jockey John Velazquez aboard.

International Star wins at Louisiana Derby: Jockey Miguel Mena guided International Star to a come-from-behind victory in the $750,000 Grade II Louisiana Derby in New Orleans, giving the horse a sweep of all three Kentucky Derby prep races at the Fair Grounds Race Course.

Predators win, secure playoff berth

Hockey: Filip Forsberg scored during a three-goal first period and had two assists as the Nashville Predators became the first Western Conference team to clinch a playoff berth with a 4-3 win over the host Washington Capitals.

The Predators have won four straight after losing nine of 11.

Ducks wrap up playoff spot: Frederik Andersen made 29 saves, and Anaheim used a two-goal second period and clinched a Western Conference playoff berth with a 3-2 win over the struggling New York Islanders in Uniondale, New York.

Rickard Rakell gave the Ducks a 1-0 lead in the first, and Kyle Palmieri and Andrew Cogliano stretched the advantage in the second for Anaheim, which leads the NHL with 103 points.

North Dakota advances to Frozen Four: Drake Caggiula scored his team-leading 18th goal of the season, Zane McIntyre stopped a handful of point-blank shots and North Dakota beat St. Cloud State 4-1 in the West regional final in Fargo, North Dakota, to advance to the Frozen Four. Rochester Institute of Technology and Boston University also earned Frozen Four spots.

U.S. opens women’s worlds with win: Jocelyne Lamoureux, Kacey Bellamy and Kendall Coyne scored power-play goals in the first period and the United States opened the women’s world hockey championships with a 4-2 victory over Canada in Malmo, Sweden.

Walker extends Texas Open lead

Golf: Jimmy Walker opened a four-stroke lead over Jordan Spieth, shooting a 3-under 69 at the Texas Open in San Antonio.

Walker shot 69 and Spieth shot 71. Spieth had a double bogey, two bogeys and two birdies on the final six holes. Phil Mickelson shot 74.

Lee atop Kia Classic leaderboard: Mirim Lee took the Kia Classic lead in Carlsbad, California, while top-ranked Lydia Ko easily increased her LPGA Tour under-par streak to 27 rounds but dropped two late strokes and ended up four shots behind. Lee shot a 6-under 66 to reach 16-under 200 at Aviara.

Sutherland takes lead with hot finish: Kevin Sutherland birdied three of the final six holes for a 5-under 67 and the second-round lead in the Champions Tour’s Mississippi Gulf Resort Classic in Saucier, Mississippi. Sutherland chipped in for birdie from behind the 12th green and birdied Nos. 15 and 16.

Trail Blazers move closer to division title

NBA: LaMarcus Aldridge had 32 points and 11 rebounds, and the Portland Trail Blazers beat the visiting Denver Nuggets 120-114 for their third consecutive victory.

Portland increased its Northwest Division lead to 6 1/2 games over second-place Oklahoma City, which lost to Utah 94-89. The Blazers have 10 games remaining in the regular season, the Thunder nine.

Jazz rally from down 16 to beat Thunder 94-89: Trey Burke scored 22 points off the bench to lead the Utah Jazz to a 94-89 victory over the Oklahoma City Thunder in Salt Lake City.

Gordon Hayward scored 17 and Rudy Gobert added 13 points, 15 rebounds and four blocks.

Bromell dominates at Texas Relays

Miscellany: Baylor sophomore Trayvon Bromell easily defended his Texas Relays title in the university 100 meters, cruising to victory in a wind-aided 9.90 seconds in Austin, Texas.

Spain’s Fernandez takes figure skating gold: Javier Fernandez cleanly landed two quad jumps in his free skate to edge defending champion Yuzuru Hanyu and become the first Spanish men’s champion at the figure skating world championships in Shanghai. In the women’s event, Elizaveta Tuktamysheva of Russia wrapped up the most successful season of her promising young career by winning the gold by more than 15 points over Satoko Miyahara of Japan.

• Texas rolls to swimming title: Joseph Schooling won the 200-yard butterfly and Will Licon took the 200 breaststroke to help Texas run away with its 11th NCAA men’s swimming title, in Iowa City, Iowa.

The Longhorns finished with 528 points. California was second 399, followed by Michigan with 312 and Southern California with 278.
