Whitworth wins 9th straight in baseball

Cory Mack went eight strong innings and Thomas Wakem broke a tie with a two run home run in the seventh inning as Whitworth beat Lewis & Clark 5-2 on Sunday in Portland for the Pirates’ ninth consecutive baseball victory.

First-place Whitworth (19-8, 11-4) swept its second straight Northwest Conference series.

Mack (3-2) went eight innings, allowing one earned on seven hits. He struck out three, walked two and hit a batter. Mack had a complete game in his previous start. His effort Sunday was the third consecutive start of eight innings or longer for Whitworth pitchers.

Wakem broke the tie with a two-out home run to left-center field in the seventh inning, his second of the season. The Pirates added another run in the eighth with the help of a throwing error by the Pioneers (5-24, 2-13).

Jeremy Druffel had two hits for Whitworth.

• UCLA (21-5, 8-1) scored two runs in each of the final three innings to take an 8-4 victory over Washington State (12-14, 1-8) in Pullman as the Cougars lost their eighth consecutive game.

A double, a hit batter and a two-run single in the eighth inning gave the Bruins the cushion they needed with a 6-3 lead.

Shea Donlin had two hits and Wes Leow drove in two runs for the Cougars. Scotty Sunitsch (0-1), the fourth of seven WSU pitchers, took the loss.

• Bobby Stahel homered in the 10th inning to lift No. 8 USC (22-6, 4-2 Pac-12) to a second straight extra-innings win over Washington (15-12, 2-7) in Seattle, 4-3.

• Loyola Marymount (16-12, 6-3 West Coast Conference) took a 4-0 lead through five innings and made it stand up for a 4-2 win over Gonzaga (12-15, 3-6) in Los Angeles. The Lions took two of three games in the series.

Sam Brown had three of the Bulldogs’ six hits. Starter Hunter Wells (0-2) went four innings and took the loss.

Softball

Megan John hit a grand slam and drove in five runs and Whitworth (22-6, 13-3 Northwest Conference) swept a doubleheader from Puget Sound, 9-0 and 6-1, in Tacoma.

Madi Perez (11-3) threw a four-hit shutout in the six-inning first game with John going 3 for 4, including her grand slam.

Makayla Lefever (11-2) got the complete-game victory in the nightcap, giving up four hits, with Kayla Batastini picking up two RBIs for three total in the two games.

The Pirates have beaten the Loggers (4-22, 1-13) in 20 straight games.

• Geri Ann Glasco hit three of Oregon’s record eight home runs and the No. 2 Ducks (30-4, 8-1 Pac-12) handed No. 19 Washington (31-9, 3-5) a 15-6 defeat in Eugene.

The Huskies hit two home runs including one by Lake City High School graduate Casey Stangel

Track and field

Freshman Kayla Brase set a school record in the women’s triple jump at 37 feet, 10 1/2 inches to notch one of 19 first-place finishes by the Whitworth women’s and men’s track teams at the George Fox Mike Allen Invitational on Saturday at Newberg, Oregon. The old record was 37-9 1/2 set by Kristen Dormaier in 2008.
