Area roundup: G-Prep’s Charlie Hopkins transfers from Stanford to Virginia

Tight end Charlie Hopkins (Gonzaga Prep) will transfer from Stanford to Virginia for his final year of football eligibility, Virginia’s athletic department announced Thursday.

Hopkins, 6-foot-6 and 260 pounds, played in all 14 games when the Cardinal competed in the Rose Bowl in 2013. He was limited to three games last season.

Hopkins will graduate from Stanford in June with a degree in science, technology and society.

Softball

Eight players from Northwest Conference champion Whitworth earned all-conference honors, including first-team choices Peyton McMahon (Deer Park), Makayla Lefever and Tessa Matthews.

McMahon, a senior outfielder, batted .359 with 16 doubles, seven home runs and 39 runs batted in. Sophomore shortstop Matthews hit .333 with 23 RBIs. Sophomore pitcher Lefever finished 17-5 with a 1.49 earned-run average.

Pirates Kayla Batastini, Chelsey Hayes and Madi Perez earned second-team honors. Shannon Wessel and Kelsey Stroshine were honorable mention.

Baseball

Elliott Cary’s one-out, two-run single to center field in the top of the 10th inning gave Oregon State (28-13, 11-8) a 4-2 win over Washington (23-20, 8-14) to open a three-game Pac-12 series at Husky Stadium.
