Need federal Food Labeling Act
We have seen across the country states attempting to mandate that foods containing GMOs (genetically modified organisms) are labeled. Finally, legislation on the federal level, the Safe and Accurate Food Labeling Act, has been introduced to address this ill-conceived and irresponsible trend.
First of all, labeling food with GMOs is wholly unnecessary. Food labeled as “USDA Certified Organic” does not contain GMOs, so those concerned about consuming GMOs have an available option. Furthermore, GMO food is perfectly safe; we have been eating GMOs for decades without a single side effect.
State-by-state GMO labeling mandates have no benefit to consumers. Rather, they will result in higher prices for families and hardship for small farmers. This approach could force families nationwide to pay hundreds of dollars, if not thousands, more per year for groceries.
By creating a national voluntary standard for labeling, the Safe and Accurate Food Labeling Act ensures that families and farmers in Washington are not burdened with the consequences of state-by-state GMO labeling. I have asked Sen. Patty Murray to support similar legislation in the U.S. Senate. I hope others will do the same.
