Awarded The Minnesota Timberwolves’ Andrew Wiggins, who was drafted No. 1 overall, was named the NBA rookie of the year on Thursday.

Extended The Orlando Magic extended general manager Rob Hennigan through the 2017-18 season. Hennigan just completed his third season as the Magic’s leader of basketball operations, and was entering the final year of his contract before the new pact.

Agreed BYU agreed to play in either the Hawaii Bowl or the Royal Purple Las Vegas Bowl at the end of the 2015 season. The school announced that the Cougars will play in one bowl at the end of the upcoming season and the other at the conclusion of 2019. Both berths are dependent on BYU being bowl eligible and not being a participant in the College Football Playoff.

Announced New VCU men’s basketball coach Will Wade will be paid $1 million per season, and his five-year contract has bonus opportunities that could significantly boost his annual compensation.

Selected Businessman and former Olympic cyclist Derek Bouchard-Hall was chosen to take over as chief executive of USA Cycling when Steve Johnson officially retires in June. Bouchard-Hall rode in major events such as Paris-Roubaix and Ghent-Wevelgem and earned a spot on the 2000 Olympic team before retiring from cycling.

Exercised The Miami Dolphins exercised their fifth-year, $16.2 million option on quarterback Ryan Tannehill’s rookie contract for 2016. Tannehill was the eighth overall pick of the 2012 draft. He has started every game in his first three NFL seasons. Last season he threw for 4,045 yards with 27 touchdowns and 12 interceptions, and his passer rating was 92.8.

Appealed A federal appeals court granted a motion from prosecutors that gives them until at least July 22 to decide whether to ask the U.S. Supreme Court to reinstate Barry Bonds’ obstruction of justice conviction. The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, which threw out Bonds’ conviction in a 10-1 vote last week, issued a one-page order that stays the issuance of a mandate that would return the case to District Court for final procedures. Bonds did not oppose the motion.

Withdrawn The ATP says world tennis No. 1 and former champion Novak Djokovic withdrew from next week’s Madrid Open without elaborating, and will return to competition the following week in Rome, where he is the defending champion.
