Shock lose to New Orleans on final play

NEW ORLEANS – Garrett Lindholm kicked a 41-yard field goal on the final play to lift New Orleans past the visiting Spokane Shock 66-63 Saturday night at Smoothie King Center. Spokane (1-4) fought back from a 15-point fourth-quarter deficit on Carson Coffman’s touchdown run, followed by Coffman’s touchdown pass to Rashaad Carter. Coffman found Mike Washington on the 2-point conversion to tie the score at 63 with eight seconds left. But Taylor Rowan’s ensuing kickoff missed the netting, giving New Orleans (2-4) possession at its 20-yard line. Former Idaho quarterback Brian Reader, pressed into duty when starter Adam Kennedy suffered a separated shoulder in the second quarter, completed a 5-yard pass. Reader’s next pass fell incomplete, leaving one second on the clock. Lindholm, who missed a 21-yard field goal with 30 seconds remaining, made the most of his second chance by connecting from 41 yards as time expired. Spokane was mistake-prone again. Coffman was intercepted three times, one returned 51 yards for a touchdown by Tracy Belton and another picked off at the Voodoo 2-yard line. Defensive back J.T. Fitzgerald made 10 tackles but was whistled for four penalties, three in the first quarter, including one that erased Sergio Gilliam’s interception in the end zone in the first quarter. Spokane was flagged 12 times for 128 yards. Coffman passed for 404 yards and seven touchdowns, three to Anthony Amos and two to Carter, who led Spokane with 126 receiving yards. Washington had seven receptions for 114 yards. Amos had 84 yards receiving and Nick Truesdell added 75. Reader finished 15 of 26 for 206 yards and three scores.
