Injured Washington wide receiver/defensive back John Ross III will miss the season after suffering a leg injury during spring practice, the school announced Thursday. Ross, a sophomore last fall, had minor knee surgery following the 2014 season but suffered a leg injury doing light work on the side during spring drills. Ross had 17 catches last season, but caught four touchdowns and returned two kickoffs for touchdowns.

Improved Former Brazilian soccer star Pele is recovering from prostate surgery in a Sao Paulo hospital. The Albert Einstein Hospital says in a statement that 74-year-old Pele is in a “stable” condition after the surgery this week. He underwent a procedure called transurethral resection of the prostate, which is usually needed to relieve urinary symptoms associated with an enlarged prostate.

Announced Quarterback Everett Golson announced he is leaving Notre Dame and will use his final season of eligibility elsewhere after graduating later this month. Golson issued a statement to Fox Sports saying he has decided to transfer.

Signed The Minnesota Lynx signed WNBA MVP Maya Moore to a new multiyear contract. Moore helped the Lynx to three straight WNBA Finals, including titles in 2011 and 2013.

Hired Florida hired Louisiana Tech’s Michael White as its next basketball coach. The school announced the move, a week after Billy Donovan left the Gators to take the head coaching job with the NBA’s Oklahoma City Thunder. White signed a six-year deal worth $2 million annually.

Sentenced A felon who seriously beat a San Francisco Giants fan outside Dodger Stadium was sentenced to six years in prison for a weapons conviction unrelated to the attack. Louie Sanchez, 33, who is serving an eight-year state prison term in the savage beating of Bryan Stow, will serve about three additional years behind bars under the terms of the sentence.

Agreed The Big 12 will only need one championship trophy this season. Conference officials agreed to break a tie for first-place in the standings with head-to-head results. Last season, Baylor and TCU both finished 8-1 in the Big 12 and were deemed co-champions, even though the Bears beat the Horned Frogs.
