College roundup: WSU’s Alivia Brown, UI’s Lelanie Kim advance to NCAA golf championships

Washington State freshman Alivia Brown and Idaho senior Lelanie Kim both claimed spots in the women’s NCAA golf championships on Saturday.

Brown shot an even-par 71 and finished in sixth place at the St. George Regional at the Entrada Golf Course at Snow Canyon Country Club in St. George, Utah. Kim fired a 2-under 70 at the South Bend Regional at Warren Golf Course in South Bend, Indiana.

Brown became the first Cougar woman to qualify as an individual.

She recovered after shooting a 6-over 77 in Friday’s second round. She posted par on the first 12 holes Saturday before a bogey on No. 13. A birdie on the par-4 17th brought her back to even for the round.

Brown finished the tournament at 6-over 219, just one stroke out of fifth place.

Her final-round performance lowered her season scoring average to 74.14, the lowest by a freshman in school history and third-lowest overall.

Kim finished in eighth place, jumping nearly 20 spots in the final round. She carded three birdies and just one bogey. She shot a bogey-free 2 under on her last 10 holes.

The NCAA Championship will be held May 22-27 in Bradenton, Florida.

• No. 6 Washington struggled in the third and final round of the San Antonio Regional, but did enough over the first two days to claim a spot in the national championship for the 12th time in school history.

The Huskies shot a 12-over 300 at Briggs Ranch Golf Course in San Antonio. They finished the tournament in fifth place at 2-under 862.

No. 21 Baylor won the regional title.

Washington’s Charlotte Thomas finished tied for 10th at 3-under. She was the only Husky golfer in red figures during the third round with a 1-under 71.

Gonzaga shot a 297 in the third round and finished in 15th place. GU’s Alice Kim fired a third-round 74 and tied for 26th overall at 1-over 217.

Tennis

Idaho’s season came to a close with a 4-0 loss to No. 6 UCLA in the second round of the NCAA women’s tournament at the Los Angeles Tennis Center.

The Vandals’ No. 1 doubles team of Galina Bykova and Emmie Marx had a tough go against the ninth-ranked doubles team in the nation, UCLA’s Robin Anderson and Jennifer Brady. Anderson and Brady won 8-2.

Anderson, the top-ranked singles player in the nation, then beat Bykova 6-1, 6-2.

Idaho finished with a 15-9 season record. The Vandals advanced to the national tournament with a 4-3 win over Sacramento State on April 26. The win broke the Hornets’ 13-year run as Big Sky Conference champions.

• Community Colleges of Spokane’s Shaylyn Goodall fell to Bellevue’s Nadean Al-Ali 6-3, 6-3 at No. 1 singles and took second place at the Northwest Athletic Conference Championships at Spokane Falls Community College.

Other second-place finishers for the CCS women included Maddy McCardell (No. 4 singles), Becky Nix (No. 5 singles), Michaela Marinos (No. 6 singles) and Goodall and Allison Mehn (No. 1 doubles), and Marinos and Lindy Brown (No. 3 doubles).

For the CCS men, Chad McKenzie took second place at No. 2 singles.

Track and field

Washington State’s Alissa Brooks-Johnson is in third place in the heptathlon after the first four events of the Pac-12 Multi-Events Championships at Drake Stadium in Los Angeles.

Her 5-foot, 7-inch high jump was the top bar clearance of the day.

For the men, Washington State’s Dino Dodig is in fifth place in the decathlon. The championships conclude today.

Baseball

Mitchell Gunsolus had four hits and drove in five runs and Gonzaga (22-24, 11-12) routed Pacific (12-34, 9-14) 19-2 in the second game of a three-game West Coast Conference series in Spokane.

Dustin Breshears added three hits and four RBIs for the Bulldogs, who put up six runs in the seventh inning.

GU’s Brandon Bailey kept the Tigers’ bats quiet. He pitched seven innings, gave up two runs on five hits, and improved his record to 8-2.

• Logan Jackson’s RBI single in the bottom of the 10th scored Michael Heaton and gave Community Colleges of Spokane a 7-6 win over Treasure Valley in the second game of a Northwest Athletic Conference doubleheader at Spokane Falls Community College.

Treasure Valley (32-15, 20-8) edged CCS 3-2 in the opener.

Next up for the Sasquatch (27-14, 16-12) is the NWAC playoffs.

They’ll play Southwest Oregon in Tacoma in the first round on Saturday.

• Levi Jordan drove in three runs to guide Washington (25-22, 10-16) to a 9-4 Pac-12 Conference win over Arizona (28-18, 12-14) in Tucson, Arizona.

Softball

No. 20 Washington’s season finale at No. 22 Utah was cancelled due to rain and will not be rescheduled.

The Huskies and Utes will both be seeking at-large bids to the NCAA tournament.

The field will be announced during a selection show that will be broadcast live on ESPNU today.
