In brief: Most members quit troubled EWU fraternity

From Staff Reports

A statement released by the national Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity Saturday says 44 of the 58 members of the fraternity’s chapter at Eastern Washington University have resigned their memberships.

A member of the national organization arrived in Cheney last month to investigate allegations of hazing, degradation of women and alcohol abuse. The majority of the members resigned from the fraternity after that visit.

“At this time, the fraternity does not believe that any of the remaining members are associated with the allegations,” the statement said.

Any fraternity members found to have violated fraternity or university policies can be expelled from the fraternity.

Condon names two for Park Board

Spokane Mayor David Condon has picked two new members of the city’s Park Board.

The nominations of Ted S. McGregor Jr., the publisher of the Inlander; and Nick Sumner, manager of clinical engineering for Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center, will be considered by the Spokane City Council on Monday.

McGregor led a group appointed by Condon that formulated a plan for upgrading Riverfront Park. Funding for that plan was approved by voters in November.

McGregor wrote in his application that he wants to continue working on Riverfront Park issues.

“I have studied Riverfront Park for years now and, based on that research, I have specific ideas about its future,” he wrote.

Sumner, 44, lives in the Grandview neighborhood on the west side of town.

While the city’s signature parks are Riverfront and Manito, other parks must not be ignored, he said.

“Ultimately, it’s the neighborhood parks that are most important to families,” he said.
