Whitworth in D-III baseball West Regional as No. 4 seed

Whitworth University has received the No. 4 seed in the six-team NCAA Division III West Regional baseball tournament and will face Millsaps in the first round at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday in Tyler, Texas.

The Millsaps Majors (28-12), from Jackson, Mississippi, a member of the Southern Athletic Association, received an at-large invitation and are seeded third. Whitworth (28-13) earned the Northwest Conference’s automatic entry after winning the first conference tournament.

Also in the West Regional are host and top-seeded Texas-Tyler (34-10); No. 2 Linfield (30-13), which tied for second with Whitworth during the NWC regular season; No. 5 Trinity, Texas (33-12); and No. 6 La Verne, California (24-18).

Regular-season NWC champion Pacific Lutheran is in the South Regional as a No. 2 seed.

Softball

Four Whitworth Pirates were named to the 2015 Division III All-West Region team by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association.

Peyton McMahon, a senior outfielder from Deer Park, was named to the second team while Makayla Lefever, sophomore, pitcher; Tessa Matthess, sophomore, shortstop; and Chelsey Hayes, freshman, outfield, were on the third team.

Track & field

Eastern Washington seniors Oliva Midles and Cody Humphrey are the Big Sky Conference Field Athletes of the Week.

Midles had a personal-best hammer throw of 187-feet, 4-inches at the Sasquatch Carnival.

Humphrey had a personal-best shot put of 55-9¾ and a discus throw of 152-5, third best in the Big Sky.

Men’s golf

Community Colleges of Spokane, led by sophomore Michael Almonte, set itself up well for the NWAC Championships next week by winning for the fifth time in six weekly tournaments.

Almonte shot a par 144 at Brandon Crossings in Brandon, Oregon, to claim medalist honors and lead four Sasquatch in the top seven as CCS shot 595 to win by 15 strokes.
