Area roundup: Cougars soar past Pilots

Ian Sagdal tripled, stole three bases and drove in three runs to propel the Washington State Cougars (27-23) to a 7-3 nonconference victory over the Portland Pilots (10-40) on Tuesday in Pasco.

Reliever Sam Triece started on the mound for the Cougars and threw 2 1/3 shutout innings. Colby Nealy followed Triece and allowed one run on five hits in 2 1/3 innings to qualify for the win.

Jack Strunc had two hits, including a double, and scored twice for WSU.

• Mitchell Tolman had three hits, including a home run, and drove in three runs to spark the host Oregon Ducks (30-22) to a 9-4 nonconference victory over the Gonzaga Bulldogs (23-25).

Men’s golf

The Whitworth Pirates found themselves in 33rd place after the first day of the NCAA Division III tournament at Grandover Resort in Greensboro, North Carolina.

Tyler McQuilkin led the Pirates with a 6-over-par 78. The top 15 teams (out of 41) after today advance to the third round.

Football

Spokane Shock defensive end James Ruffin was named the AFL’s defensive player of the week.

Ruffin had 1 1/2 sacks, two forced fumbles and a fumble recovery in Spokane’s 68-46 victory over the Los Angeles Kiss.
