Area roundup: Oregon tops GU in pitcher’s duel

Phil Craig-St. Louis stroked a two-run double in the bottom of the sixth inning to lift the Oregon Ducks (31-22) to a 2-1 nonconference victory over the Gonzaga Bulldogs (23-26) on Wednesday in Eugene, Oregon.

Taylor Jones drove in GU’s lone run with a sacrifice fly in the top of the third.

Calvin LeBrun (2-5) took the loss for the Zags. He allowed two runs on four hits in six innings.

• Whitworth’s NCAA Division III West Regional game against Millsaps College was rained out in Tyler, Texas, and will be made up today.

Track and field

Eastern Washington’s Jozie Kimes is in 11th place in the women’s heptathlon after the first day of the Big Sky Conference Outdoor Championships at Roos Field in Cheney.

Kimes totaled 2,619 points. Montana State’s Carley McCutchen is the leader with 3,038 points.

Alec Acevedo of Sac State leads the men’s decathlon with 3,722 points.

Rowing

Gonzaga’s varsity 8+ was named the West Coast Conference women’s rowing team of the month for April.

The GU crew, ranked 19th, consists of Karly Dougherty (coxswain), Kara Soucek, Ingrid Stansberry, Isabelle Belzil, Devyn Bell, Brooklyn Beeler, Maddie Turbes, Casey Burt and Olivia Marsh.

Men’s golf

The Whitworth Pirates failed to make the cut at the NCAA Division III men’s golf tournament at Grandover Resort in Greensboro, North Carolina.

Andrew Dodge turned in the best round for the Pirates with a 2-over-par 74. Whitworth placed 30th out of 41 teams. The top 15 advanced.

Prep baseball

Ben Knight allowed two hits with seven strikeouts and went 2 for 3 at the plate with four RBIs to propel the Colville Indians to an 11-0 five-inning victory over the visiting Deer Park Stags in a loser-out semifinal game in the District 7 1A tournament.

Colville will play Freeman in the championship game on Saturday.

In the other semifinal, McKabe Cottrell and Jake Phipps combined to throw a one-hitter and the Freeman Scotties cruised to a 5-0 victory over the visiting Medical Lake Cardinals. Phipps also delivered a two-run triple.
