Last day of filing concludes; two City Council picks emerge
The last day of filing for political office attracted two new choices for Spokane City Council, but candidate lineups for mayor and City Council president didn’t change.
Races for the Spokane Valley City Council also were unchanged Friday. No one filed after Tuesday for any of the three Valley seats on this year’s ballot.
One of the new Spokane candidates is Ben Krauss, a former police officer in Tukwila and Kent who is a crime analyst with the Spokane Police Department. Earlier this year, Krauss was one of eight people named to Mayor David Condon’s advisory on multicultural affairs work group, which is tasked with examining police-citizen contacts.
He will face incumbent Mike Fagan and Randy Ramos, a recruiter with the Spokane Tribal College.
The other council candidate who entered the race Friday is Evan Verduin, a former project manager with Nystrom Olson Architecture who owns his own design firm and serves on the City Plan Commission. He and his wife developed a modern townhouse at the intersection of North Hamilton Street and East Indiana Avenue near Gonzaga University.
He will face incumbent Karen Stratton; Kelly Cruz, former West Central Neighborhood Council president; and David White, a Spokane County worker who has previously run for state House as a Republican.
The race for the open state House seat vacated this month after the resignation of Susan Fagan also remained static on the last day of filing.
Three will face off to finish the last year in the term: Mary Dye, who was appointed to the seat last week; former Franklin County Sheriff Richard Lathim; and former Othello City Councilman Kenneth Caylor. Dye and Lathim are Republicans. Caylor is a Democrat.
