The Dirt: STCU plans Latah Valley branch

Spokane Teachers Credit Union said it will start construction for a new branch at the Latah Creek Plaza late this year.

STCU plans to open its Qualchan branch, at 4233 S. Cheney-Spokane Road, in 2016. The site is near U.S. Highway 195 in a retail center with a Trading Co. store.

Instead of constructing from scratch, STCU will remodel and nearly double the size of a former AmericanWest branch. The new 3,500-square-foot space is designed to have the craftsman-style architecture of recently built STCU branches in south Spokane Valley and Coeur d’Alene.

It will be STCU’s 19th branch and have five employees. The branch also will have STCU’s first free-standing drive-thru.

STCU will own the building and lease the land from NAI Black. Founded in 1934, the credit union has 136,000 members in Eastern Washington and North Idaho.

MOD Pizza planning downtown, CdA sites

MOD Pizza plans to open in downtown Spokane at 707 W. Main Ave. In late April, the chain opened its first restaurant here on the South Hill in the Regal Plaza, 3104 E. Palouse Highway.

The Bellevue-based company has plans under review with the city for the downtown location at the corner of Main and Wall Street, where Madeleine’s Cafe & Patisserie operated. Madeleine’s reopened in March in a newly renovated space down the street at 415 W. Main.

MOD Pizza also has targeted a July opening for a Coeur d’Alene eatery at 2824 N. Ramsey Road in the CrossRoads retail center, which is anchored by a WinCo Foods grocery store, its website said.

The chain has announced an aggressive national expansion plan and now has more than 30 stores. It features pizzas topped with fresh ingredients and cooked fast in 800-degree ovens.

Silvey Construction projects underway

Silvey Construction of Spokane Valley has two projects underway: a medical building in north Spokane and a small retail strip in Spokane Valley.

Construction is expected to wrap up late summer or early fall for the $4 million, two-story North Nevada Professional Building, at 9911 N. Nevada St. Within the 38,600-square-foot building, Silvey has started interior finishing work for Engen & Hahn Dental, one of the first tenants among other expected medical and dental offices.

In Spokane Valley, Silvey Construction recently started work on a former bingo hall to remodel it into a small retail strip at 1212 N. Pines Road. Contractor Mike Silvey said the center is expected to have two to four bays available for lease, but the exact retail mix isn’t yet determined.
