Education Notebook: St. George’s teams earn state academic honor

St. George’s School’s varsity baseball team’s and varsity boys tennis team’s grade-point averages of 3.499 and 3.656, respectively, have earned them the WIAA Academic State Championship for highest grade-point average among 2B-size schools.

The baseball team players are Chris Caporicci, Charlie Darnall, Hunter Hyde, Matthew Lazarus, Hunter Nolte, Blaise Osborne, Cody Peplinksi, Zach Steele, Katie Thew, Michael Thew, Felix Tsai, Alex Watkins, Isaac Werkman and Xander Werkman.

The boys tennis team players are Collin Cremers, Connor Cremers, Kenneth Day, Matt Gill, Daniel Gimbel, Mark Hay, Michael Hamilton, Patrick Hasdorff, Andrew Jauhiainen, Cade Martin, Michael Nord, Jacob Martin and Cade Peplinski.

Musicians help Wounded Warriors

The Central Valley High School Wind Ensemble recently raised $ for the Wounded Warrior Project through its annual benefit concert.

The Wounded Warrior Project works to raise awareness about the needs of injured service members and to support programs to meet those needs.

Focus Award honors

Seniors from Lewis and Clark, Mead, Shadle Park and University high schools recently won the Focus Award, a $2,000 scholarship presented by STCU and the Community Colleges of Spokane Foundation.

Briar Bertoch, of LC, plans to attend Spokane Falls Community College then study pre-medicine at the University of Washington.

Haley Gee, of Shadle Park, plans to attend Spokane Falls then study bioengineering at Washington State University.

Kristina Volz, of Mead, plans to obtain a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from WSU then apply to the school’s College of Pharmacy.

Kelsi Walker, of U-Hi, plans to take business classes at Spokane Falls and perhaps pursue international business and marketing at a university.

Central Valley School District has new people filling some of its leadership positions.

Eric Hoglund was hired as the district’s executive director of elementary learning and teaching. He is currently the principal at Prairie View Elementary School in the Mead School District.

Molly Carolan was named director of special education. She is currently the principal at the Summit School and Spokane Valley Learning Academy.

After current principal Gordon Grassi’s retirement, assistant principal Lora Jackson will become the principal of North Pines Middle School. She previously worked as a principal assistant at Chase Middle School.

After a year as interim principal, Keven Frandsen has been hired as the principal of University High School. He has worked for the district since 1991.

Kimberly Kyle was hired as Central Valley Kindergarten Center principal and will transition to the assistant principal at the Liberty Lake K-2 School in a few years. She currently works as the dean of students at Fulton Elementary School in Chandler, Arizona.

These positions are effective July 1.

Marla Nunberg Genther was hired as the district’s director of communications and has been working since April. She was the vice president of Downtown Spokane Partnership for 17 years.
